I wish I could pinpoint the exact moment when I realized that I had thinning hair. I only know that I’ve noticed the problem for two years now. There is major thinning on the top of my scalp. My hairline has remained in place thankfully. And the hair above my neck, although thinner than I’d like it to be, is not my main concern.

Background:

I’m a 21-year-old female. I’ll be starting my senior year of college at the end of the month. I started birth control (Tri-Nessa) when I was 18 and was on it pretty regularly for over two years when I stopped because I thought it was affecting my sex drive. That was earlier this year. I switched to a different kind (Cryselle) for two months and then stopped altogether (until I start it again next week).

My mother has severe hair loss but I’ve never asked her information about it. But hers looks like the same problem that I’m having. But her hair is brittle from constantly dying it when my hair is thin and lifeless and always lies flat. My hair is about 4 inches past my shoulders (I know that being concerned with hair loss, I should really keep my hair shorter but I just love my hair long).

I don’t have the healthiest diet in the world but I always figured that this was sort of a non-issue. My mom and sister (who I’ve noticed has thinning hair too but never mentioned it) eat basically nothing but vegetables and fruits and it hasn’t helped them.

Within the last couple months, I’ve noticed that my scalp has developed sore pimples and bumps. I can’t say with certainty that I haven’t had these all along, but I’ve only just noticed them. There aren’t a lot of them, I would say around 5 or 6 at any given time.

Recently (since I’ve been researching the topic) I’ve been noticing that at the end of the hairs are the little white bulbs that I can’t get exact information on. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that they’re falling out with the hair. Also I have what I saw someone describe on this website as sand on my head where it’s just little white things that I find in my hair.

I have more than average body hair in my opinion. My arm and leg hairs are dark and thick and grow very fast. Same with under arm and hair on my stomach. I’ve read that this might have something to do with the genetics.

I have to wash my hair on a daily basis. I think this is a combination of having an over-oily scalp and having such thin hair that the oil spreads easily. I lose lots of hair in the shower and especially when I brush my hair. I tried not brushing my hair but then it would just fall out when I would run my fingers through my hair.

I have an extreme type B personality so I don’t have very much stress in my life. I’ve always been taught that everything always works out so I don’t stress. The only thing that has made me stress is this hair loss that brings me to tears if I think about it too much.

I tried Nioxin shampoo/conditioner and taking biotin pills but I didn’t use them long enough to get any real results (it was for less than a month because I was convinced it was making it worse).

I haven’t been to a doctor because I’m in a small town and can’t even find a dermatologist/trichologist in the area. Even if I could find one, I have no idea if this is something insurance would cover or if I would have to pay for the tests they would run. I’m a college student who pays her own rent and buys her own food so I don’t have much money to spend on these kinds of things if insurance doesn’t cover some.

I’ve read that an excess of vitamin A can cause hair loss but I think I can rule this out because the only vitamin A I really consume would be milk in the morning with cereal.

I just ordered rogaine for women and nioxin pills. I’m afraid to use the rogaine now because I read somewhere that hair becomes dependent on it and will all fall out if you stop using it.

I realize that this is a lot of information but I just didn’t know what would be helpful and what wouldn’t so I just added everything.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance that anyone would be able to give me. It would be especially helpful to hear from people going through the same thing. I’m okay with getting advice that I don’t want to hear (with a pending breakdown) because I’m starting to accept that this is happening. Thanks in advance.

Magically I found a dermatologist who has an opening for the end of this month! Now I need different advice. What kind of questions do I ask? What tests do I ask for? What information do I need to bring/give to make the doctor understand? Thanks.

Tell you derm you’re freaking out because your hair is falling out like crazy! Ham it up a bit! Get a diagnosis of what type of hair loss you have. That will help with picking out treatments. I’m sure your dermatologist will order some blood work first. He or she will check certain hormone levels, your thyroid etc. Then give you a diagnosis. If he or she doesn’t…ask for one.

Since you are a 21 year old female, I think it is less likely you have typical female pattern hair loss. It could be something else. Perhaps hormonal, thyroid or medication related. Also in my experience it could be stress related….but typically something that happened months ago. It could also be a health problem you had months ago. (just in my experience I have no studies demonstrating this effect) Sometimes you never figure out what it is and it stops on it’s own and your hair eventually recovers.

Also realize that just because a hair falls out….that doesn’t mean it won’t grow back. Hope this helps.

Hair fall can also occur due to stress or depression. Even I used to suffer from hair fall during my monthly periods. I consulted with the doctor, where she gave some medications, that helped me a lot, she said that hair fall may occur due to improper diet and stress during menstrual periods. She also recommended to try menstrual cups when heavy bleeding so that you are stress free and comfortable in those days, you may also check it from cupissima.com

Hi,

You are losing hair mainly because of the birth pills and unhealthy diet. First eat good food nutritious food which is good for your hair. You should include plenty of vegetables, fruits, omega 3 fatty acids and proteins in your diet.

Almost the same happened to me…The only product that I still keep on using to prevent the hair loss is Forta Hair (www.fortahair.com) My friend gave a sample. My hair looks and feels better. Although it makes it a bit greasy but I started to see the results within first month. the package has oil, shampoo and conditioner.
